Shiva Temple

Sree Vellat Puthur Shiva Temple

.
The Sree Vellat Puthur Shiva Temple is only an hour away from the famous Guruvayoor Temple in Kerala, yet very few people know about this very powerful Shiva temple nestled, almost hidden, in a tiny town called Perintalmanna, in the western ghats in Kerala.
.
Lord Shiva and Parvati
Astrological recordings found at the site show that the temple was consecrated by yogis over 1500 years ago and the Shakti of Goddess Parvati is hidden in the Shiva Lingam. The recordings show that the deity should be worshiped as Lord Parama Shiva and that all those who worship at this temple will attain supreme bliss. Those who worship here attest to the intense power of the deity to cure mental disorders, ward off dangers, and bless devotees with a smooth run of life in the family.

Dakshinamurthy, Kirathamurthy and Sankaranarayana murthy
The great sanctity of the Shiva Lingam here is that the Lord is associated with his aspects i.e. Dakshinamurthy, Kirathamurthy and Sankaranarayana murthy, the murtis of whom are installed in the temple as upa devatas and in shrines of their own.

The other upa devatas in the temple are Ganesha, Subramanian, Sasthavu and Naga prathista. Previously Lord Krishna as Venugopalamurthy was worshipped in the temple as an upadevata.

Lord Krishna
In 1978, an Ashtamangalya Prasna conducted in the temple found that Venugopalamurthy (Krishna) should be worshipped treating the lord as the second main deity of the temple.
.
Accordingly a new temple for Venugopalamurthy (Krishna) was constructed in the temple compound in 1980. The murti of Venugopalamurthy(Krishna) is beautiful. At the time of Deeparadhana the smiling face of the Lord is bedecked with sandal paste and crowned with a diadem and the Lord reveals his blissful nature and devotees feel his grace. This may be the reason the temple has been attracting people from around the world.

Sree Thirumandham Kunnu Bhagavathi
Another specialty of this temple is the presence of Sree Thirumandham Kunnu Bhagavathi. The Goddess is so beautiful and powerful that she is to be experienced. As an act of reverence to the Bhagavathi, a Tantric ritual known as"Kalamezhuthu and Kalampattu" for Sree Bhadrakali is conducted in this temple for more than 90 days ending with the Thalapoli Festival on Karthika day in the month of Meenom every year.

By worshipping the main deities, Lord Siva and Venugopalamurthy(Krishna), and the Upa Devatas in the temple, the devotees can lead a peaceful and contented household life free from worries and troubles.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Japam

.
When chanted with love and devotion, this mantra will protect us from all evil, remove diseases, and bestow upon us peace, prosperity and good health. It will ultimately free us from the cycle of birth and death.

Six months before a disease is noticeable, the aura of the body becomes very weak. To strengthen the aura, chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or listen to it using headphones. Do not repeat it in silent meditation. This mantra is an external mantra which should only be heard or chanted. If played at the bedside of an ailing person, it will bring them great relief.
.
Aum Tryambakam Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam
Urva rukamiva Bandhanat
Mrtyor muksheeya Maamritat

O three-eyed one, O Shiva we worship and adore thee. You are the fragrance of life, who nourishes us, restores our health, and causes us to thrive. As, in due time, the stem of the cucumber weakens, and the gourd is freed from the vine, so free us from attachment and death, and do not withhold immortality.

Seven Japam Participants Visit Puthur Shiva Temple

Annapoorni Venkatesh has sent us this email:

"We have just returned from a two-week pilgrimage of Kerala and I am speechless. We had such amazing darshan every where that I am still crying from the experience.

My husband and I, our two children and my sister and her two children (all of whom belong to Puthur Shiva's internet japam group) arrived in a tiny town called Tirur in Kerala on the first leg of our pilgrimage. We had darshan of Alathiyoor Hanuman and Kadampuzha in the morning and were not sure if we should go to the Puthur Shiva Temple the same day or continue on to Pambha where our family was going to split up into two groups. My husband and some of the children were going to Sabarimala, while my sister and I and her 4-year-old son were going to stay back in Pambha and visit some local temples.

We were undecided when to visit Puthur Shiva Temple when Puthur Shiva decided it for us. My sister's 4-year old son suddenly took ill. He lay down on his mother's lap saying he was feeling feverish and tired. My sister got worried and said she was not going anywhere. I, too, thought that was the right decision when on an impulse I said, "Let us go to Puthur Shiva Temple first. Everything will be alright." I hadn't even completed the sentence when the child got up and started running around.

The Children Chanted On The Way

The children chanted Om Namah Shivaya all the way to the Puthur Shiva Temple. You must remember these children have experience in chanting from participating in this internet japam group. First we went to Thirumandham Kunnu Bhagavathy Temple in Angadipuram and had a nice darshan. Then we went to the Puthur Shiva Temple. We arrived at about 5.30 p.m.

The birds started chirping just as we entered the temple. We were so happy. We remembered your experience with these birds (see
http://puthurshivatemple.blogspot.com/2009/08/our-visit-to-puthur-shiva-temple-on.html ).

We entered the Sreekovil and it seemed like Puthur Shiva was eagerly waiting for us. He was smiling. Two weeks after our trip, that smiling face is still firmly etched in my mind. We stood in front of him for 10 minutes, not moving, just gazing at his beautiful face. Then we remembered we should chant the Namashiva Panchakshari mantra. All the children chanted with us. It was so beautiful, us chanting together as a family in front of Puthur Shiva.

My Mind Went Blank in Front of Puthur Shiva

My sister has sponsored 101-kodum dhara for seven continuous months and prayed Puthur Shiva will grant her darshan every year. I also prayed that I would get darshan of Him whenever I visit Kerala. I didn't ask Him for anything else. For some reason, my mind went blank while standing in front of Him. Unknown to me, I was crying the whole time I was standing in front of Him. Even now, as I am writing this, I am sobbing thinking of the beautiful darshan we had. I want to write more but am unable to. It was due to Puthur Shiva's grace that we had darshan of Him right on the day we arrived in Kerala. It was on a Monday, His favourite day.

It was Puthur Shiva's grace again that we were able to go to so many temples in Kerala in such a short time and have good darshan in all of them. In Guruvayoor, I had faith that something would happen and it did. We got a marvellous darshan within 15 minutes of arriving at the temple. We got to stand for a full five minutes before Guruvayoorappan. The whole pilgrimage went off so well. There were no health problems or any problem, considering we were travelling with small children. My heart is so full of gratitude for Puthur Shiva.

We Thank You For This Japam

We thank you for starting this japam group. It has given us, and especially the children, a chance to chant this powerful mantra."

Lord Ganesha
